Most of the challenges I post on this blog are focused on ones that individuals initiate and strive to overcome. However, oftentimes, individuals are forced to deal with challenges that are a result of someone else’s behavior. That was the case with Amira Smiley. She was born to parents with drug addictions; her mother died of a drug overdose when Amira was 11 and a father who had a history of drug-related problems with the law. At an early age, Amira had to fend for herself and take care of her younger sister Gia. Thanks to the unrelenting support and love from her grandmother, the encouragement from coaches, teachers and friends, and her love for the game of golf, Amira has done more than survive, she has thrived. She has differentiated herself by her work ethic in school and on the golf course. A dominant Growth Mindset is a positive byproduct of the challenges she experienced at such a young age. There is no doubt in my mind, Amira’s Growth Mindset has the power to continue to help her, “Go confidently in the direction of her dreams to live the life she has imagined.”
